Meningococcal Vaccination

Meningococcal vaccines protect against the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection transmitted through saliva and can cause two very serious illnesses — meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia). These can lead to permanent disability, deafness, or even death.

What is Meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can initially appear similar to flu-like illnesses. Around 80% of cases present with a distinctive rash that does not blanch (turn pale or white) when pressed.

Why should I get the Meningococcal Vaccination?

Meningitis and septicaemia can cause severe illness, including brain damage, blood poisoning, and even limb loss. These conditions are most common in children under 5, teenagers, and young adults, especially those living in close quarters, such as halls of residence.

Meningococcal Disease Awareness – Protect First-Year Students

In New Zealand, the disease is mainly caused by five bacterial groups: A, B, C, W, and Y. It can lead to meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal membranes) or septicaemia (blood poisoning), both of which can cause organ damage, disabilities, or even death.

Students entering their first year in shared living setting, like university halls, hostels, or boarding schools, are at increased risk.

If you're 16–25 years old and living in your first year in close-contact environments (boarding school, hostels, university halls, military barracks), you qualify for free meningococcal vaccines at Life Pharmacy.

1. Bexsero (Meningococcal B Vaccine) protects against the B serogroup – 2 doses (recommended 8 weeks apart)

2. MenQuadfi (Meningococcal ACWY) which protects against the ACWY serogroups – 1 dose

For the best protection, it’s recommended to get both vaccines in the same visit, given in different arms or sites.

Book your free meningococcal vaccinations today at your nearest Life Pharmacy. For peace of mind in close-living environments. Additional information about the meningococcal vaccines is available on the Healthify website here.

Please note: Some Unichem who have completed extended training can provide vaccinations on the childhood immunisation schedule including Bexsero. It is recommended that you call the pharmacy ahead of time to find out if they offer this service.
